Honey - Food & Medicine

October 21, 2020 2 min read

Honey

Honey has been used as a powerhouse food source and potent medicine for thousands of years and across cultures all over the world. There is reference to the use of honey in ancient Sumerian texts, and through the early civilisations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as in Chinese medicine and the Ayurvedic traditions of India.

The colour and flavour of honey varies considerably depending on factors such as season and the type of flowers the bees harvest. Honey has high levels of monosaccharides, fructose, and glucose, and it contains about 70 to 80 percent sugar, giving it a pleasant and sweet taste.

Health benefits

  • Honey contains many important antioxidants which can help the reduce risk of heart attacks and strokes
  • Can help lower blood pressure
  • Can improve cholesterol
  • Can promote wound and burn healing
  • Can help suppress coughs in children
  • A heathier alternative to refined sugar
  • Honey has antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties
  • Phytonutrient properties
  • Helps to sooth a sore throat (in hot water and lemon if you like!)

Manuka Honey

Manuka Honey is a mono-floral honey produced from the nectar of the manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) tree. We source our manuka honey from apiarists who harvest from manuka trees along Australia’s pristine coastlines and bushland.

Manuka has similar but more potent healing benefits to regular raw honey. This Australian honey is extracted and produced at a low temperature to retain its natural colour and flavour, helping to preserve the honey's natural state and health properties.

This particular variety has a delicious light taste and wonderful creamy texture.

Bee Pollen

Known as the Ambrosia of the Bees, Organic Bee Pollen has a delicate floral bouquet and a pleasantly subtle sweetness.

Organic Bee Pollen is one of Nature’s finest superfoods. Flower pollen is combined with nectar and a little bit of magic from the bees, catalysing mild fermentation which in turn creates biochemical transformations and increased nutrient bioavailability.

The nutrient content varies considerably depending on the type of plants the bees have been harvesting, the season, and other variables. Typical analysis shows a vast array of biologically active substances including proteins, carbs, amino acids, lipids, antioxidants, enzymes, and minerals.

Health Benefits

  • High antioxidant level can protect against free radicals and chronic disease
  • Can assist in lowering high blood lipids and cholesterol, preventing heart disease
  • Boost liver function and protect against toxins
  • Anti- inflammatory properties
  • Boosts immunity by killing bacteria
  • Can reduce some menopausal symptoms
  • Can improve metabolism and absorption of nutrients
